The Sandbox
The boy watches the other kids play in the sandbox,
The light of youth on their faces.
The boy always wanted this light
To enjoy himself in the company of others.
Solitary birthdays and recesses spent alone
Snuffed out any joy he could have had with his peers.
The boy’s only companions were the dark spirits that
Made his voice tremble, made his eyes twitch,
Made his heart race.
The boy never approached the sandbox, for
The Spirits always convinced him that they were
The better company; They had always been there for
Him, after all.
