Everyone always hears about how a man loves a woman.
Everyone always hears about her small red lips,
her long black hair.
How come we never hear about how a woman loves a man?
We act like it’ s a sin for a woman to proclaim her love for a man.
He’s the man,
He should announce his love for her to the world.
And that he did, just two years ago
Now it’s my turn.

I can’t write about his perfect, waist long, blonde hair,
or his sparkling eyes.
I can’t write about his cute, innocent giggle when I hold his hand,
or his small dainty hands.

However...

I can write about his wide, soulful eyes.
About how they reflect every star in the sky, day or night,
and how they’re never hard.
They’re always soft and full with compassion for every living thing.
I can write about how I never really liked brown eyes, but now I seem to long for them over crystal ones,
and how I can feel them on me even when I look away.

I can write about the small smile that creeps onto his face when I place my head on his shoulder.
About how it’s always bright,
and how it’s always reassuring.
I can write about how he always manages one when I’m falling apart,
because he knows it makes me feel better.
And how he always seems to have one when I’m unsure.

I can write about the warmth of his hand when he clutches mine.
About how it’s always soft and gentle, no matter what he’s doing.
And how they’re always around me when I’m scared, or tired, or sad, or just whenever.
I can write about how they always give mine a small, encouraging squeeze when I hesitate.

I can write about how smart he is,
and how he’s exceeding every expectation ever put on him.
I can write about how when I don’t know something, he seems to always know the correct answer.
And how he always seems to know everything,
not in a bad way,
but he always has answer for any question or feeling.

I can write about how he loves me,
and how he bought me roses every other Saturday.
I can write about how he stays up with me until two in the morning even though he’ll be exhausted tomorrow.
I can write about how he always seems to spoil me,
and how he drives to me any hour of the night if I’m not okay.
About how he always does the most, even just for the little things.

I can write all these things about him,
However,
I won’t.

Replace every he and his with she and her, and you’ll see he wrote these things for another,
just two years ago.

The author's comments:

Originally, this project was made as part of my grade for a class I'm taking in school. I thought about writing a love poem, which I then started. After a while though, I thought it would be more interesting to put a little spin on it. In case anyone doesn't realize, at the beginning, the poem says, "And that he did, just two years ago." Keeping that line in mind is important to the twist in the poem. I ended it with, "He wrote these things for another, just two years ago." This implies it's a poem that perhaps he had written for another girl that this persona maybe found in his desk or something. She simply took the words he wrote and replaced "she" and "her" with "he" and "his". In order to get the effect of the full thing, you'd have to go back and put "her" and "his" back in, in order to reveal the "original poem."
