Water
Turn on the shower
And step into the steaming water
My hair becomes heavier on my head
Streaming down my back
And an image comes into my mind.
It was the day before,
And I was on Google Images
Researching water issues
When a picture of a child
Pops up.
It is an African girl
Her ribs are sticking out
And her face is gaunt.
There is a caption under the picture
That says
“On average, an American
Uses 176 gallons of water a day
While an African family only uses five.”
I think of this
As I rinse out my hair.
I quickly turn the shower off
And throw on some clothes.
Today,
That girl is going to be sent a package
Full of bottles of water
And food.
Today,
This American is going to make a difference.

I was just thinking about how awful it would be to not have enough water, and I decided that if I wrote a poem about it, maybe the problem could be adressed.
