Where I come from
I come from
The sand on Plum Island beach
The roaring ocean and delicate sea glass
I come from homemade fudge and the ashes of my grandfather's cigar.
I come from
That buzz of energy that lies above a family reunion
I come from the feeling of trying something new
I’m from 79¢ toothpaste
And store bought ice cream .
I come from grief
overwhelming grief
but mostly a small closet atop a set of stairs
I come from crooked smiles
and jagged teeth.
I’m from bushy eyebrows
and a simple disposition
I come from
melting ice and sloshy roads
I come from falling leaves
and April’s first shower.
Most importantly
I come from love
that‘s the most important
that’s what matters.
