Why I Don't Answer my Phone Calls
I hate the way my signature ring tone sounds when someone calls,
an incessant tune constantly looping over and over-
like a scratched CD trying to figure out where it was in a song,
just for the sake of saying:
Hey! Someone’s trying to get a hold of you! Answer me!
Phone calls make me feel insecure-
about any and everything,
specifically what I might say,
(a voice dripping with venom,
false hatred,
overflowing with hurt,
making the atmosphere thick-
“Maybe I don’t want to be friends anymore!”)
where the conversation will lead,
(Fan sputtering in the background,
cutting through the almost hard to breathe air,
a voice full of accusation-
lacking sensitivity,
“Where were you for like, two weeks? we all thought you were dead.
Hey, Morgyn disappeared too. What’s wrong?”)
what my voice sounds like.
Seeing something in the form of a text is far more comforting,
I get time to savor the words and process my next move giving as much thought to it as I can,
you can go back and re-read what you've been told,
phone calls cannot do this.
Whenever I receive a phone call-
I feel obligated to feel like the subject will be a bad one-
but I suppose that’s due to my current bingeing on Orange is the New Black.
I suppose I will stick with pretending I’m not home.
