Peasant and the King
I am the king
I sit upon the throne, looking down at the peasants
Seeing how they wish that they were me, but only that dream can come true in their mind.
I am the peasant
I work for the king just to live.
I have no money and the king’s slave chambers are my asylum.
I wish that the king would be nicer and give me payment for the work
But asking that is only rewarded by execution.
My royal advisors guide me in some ways
But I make most of the decisions myself.
Those decisions affect the people around me
Some may not like it and some may even despise it
But as their king I sometimes have to make sacrifices.
I do what I think is for their own good.
The king just made the announcement that all of the peasants had to pay taxes
How can I afford that I do not know.
I live on the wages the king givers me, which is only enough for a loaf of bread.
If I pay the taxes, I might as well starve to death.
One of the peasants has decided that he would not pay the taxes.
What a shame, I have to throw him in the cells
He was a good worker.
But, his actions are a lesson to the people: you disobey the king, there are harsh consequences.
I sit in the cell and think
“Why did I make this move?”
I have no answer to that.
I would have died either way: out of starvation or out of the wrath of the king.
Either way, I would have reached the same conclusion.
