Fear
It follows you
Like a shadow.
Seeps in your mind,
Every waking moment.
Carrying its weight on our back,
It sleeps with us.
It swallows us,
It controls us.
So evil it acts,
With such malicious intent.
It follows you,
Until consumes you.

My name is Emma Goode, I am a senior in high school. Currently, I am taking a course called “Creative Writing,” and for my final project, I want to submit one of my favorite pieces of literature I wrote from the semester to Teen Ink. During my course, we were required to create a poetry portfolio and the theme for my portfolio was “Human Emotions.” I love writing poems that capture my personal feelings and experiences to make connections with the readers. The poem I am choosing to submit is a free verse poem that deals with the emotion, “fear.” This emotion is indefinitely something everyone deals and struggles with; therefore I thought it would be a good topic to submit to reach a wide audience who have similar struggles. I am super excited to take this opportunity in my class to share some of my writing!
