Chemistry, Period 5
Bunsen Burners stand opposite
30 makeshift scientists,
a digressed blur of noise filling
the smoky air of the classroom.
Deep inhale as your fingers skip through brief fire,
laughing at the rush of no real risk,
hair tied up with a gentle blush
at the classroom rules, pinned to the wall
with its typed, smug authority.
So you rip it off and burn the sheet
in the dancing, harmless blaze
that squeals with its own rebellion.
Your teacher narrows his eyes, but smiles
as 30 textbooks follow suit, each one
bursting into victorious flames
and ringing the escape of a bell.
