Once, in a room filled with children’s boredom,

careful fingers made gentle folds.

Over and over, the crisp paper creased

until a phantom figure took form.

Two, three, four, five.

The figures took shape again and again,

each one more sinister than the next.

They cast silhouettes by the moonlight

that poured in ever so knowingly

through the open window.

It seemed as though it knew

exactly what was in store for the

fearsome phantoms that haunted the

restless children’s room.

The clock ticked and tocked its many minutes

until at last the careful fingers were sent to bed.

And all too quickly, the figures

emerged from their shadows.

Swiftly swaying, the phantoms took flight

on that silent, solemn night.

The author's comments:

Hi! My name is Ahana. The inspiration for my poem happened last Halloween. My younger brother and I were folding origami ghosts in preparation for Halloween, and soon, our house was filled with dozens of scary-looking paper ghosts! The night before Halloween, I was looking around our house and I imagined a scene in which all the origami ghosts came to life. It felt so haunting, which is why I decided to write a poem about it. I thought it would be fun to experiment with the mood and tone of the poem to fit how I imagined the scene to be.
