scars
when do we put up the last flag of the year?
when do we stop treating her like she’s nothing to us?
how many names will we shout to the so darkened skies?
how many men will be shot down, and given new scars?
i know i will never understand
i’m not losing my mothers, and brothers, and sisters, and fathers
but we’re losing something else
we’re losing humanity
when will we stop normalizing the murders?
when the cops get off free without doubt or guilt in their hands
when will the boy stop crying over his father?
he’s got nothing left
stop putting these scars on our people
they aint doing nothing to us
stop demonizing a color
when there’s nothing left but us
another candlelight vigil
how many more can we take?
with ‘i can’t breathe’s and ‘don’t shoot’s and hands up
they’re screaming it in our face
we can’t just stop seeing color
that’s never how it’ll work
we just need a deep understanding
they ain’t doing nothing
they ain’t doing nothing to us
