Where I'm From
I am from bells,
from memory games and backyard swings.
I am from the open fields and side yards.
(Vibrant, green
It felt like home and smelled like freedom.)
I am from the cypress knees
the sunflower
that had grown higher than the rooftop
as I imagined I would grow to be that tall someday.
I’m from the pecan pies and strong love,
from Calvin, Uncle Bob, and Aunt Lea.
I’m from the loud get togethers
and enjoyable moments,
from “sharing is caring” and “focus grasshopper”.
I’m from I can do all things through christ who strengthens me
and prayerful hands.
I’m from Felix St. and the Ice House,
gumbo and red beans and rice.
From the Schwinn bicycle I learned to ride with Uncle Mark,
the joy I felt when my brothers were born.
With captured memories of smiling faces and happy families
in the hallway, bedrooms, and bookshelves,
I look back and see that
I am from an enjoyable childhood with family gatherings,
music, campfires, and Finding Nemo.
