Finding Light in the Dark

The changes started young.
I knew I was going through them,
But I did not know what they were.
The changes were normal for me,
Until I grew older.
I was asked so many questions,
And I never knew what to say.
I finally decided to ask.

The answers were revealed,
And now I had some knowledge.
The questions still came through, though.
I got the looks up and down,
I got the endless laughter,
I got the constant teasing.
“Hey, Spots!”
There was nothing I could do.

I finally learned to ignore and deal with it,
And everything went away.
Life was fine until the changes started again.
Afraid of what would happen,
I concealed myself to everyone.
I was in the dark for so long.
I hated it.
One day, I decided to find the light.

The light gave me all things good.
Positivity. Curiosity. Amazement.
It was uplifting.
—”Wow! What is that?”
—”That looks so cool!”
—”I wish I had that!”
I didn’t know what to do,
Or how to react.

The experience was uplifting in a way.
I felt better and less self conscious.
While there were still those people,
The ones who point and stare,
The ones who judge,
You learn to ignore them.
You also learn to embrace yourself,
And you feel more confident.

If I didn't go through the changes I did,
I would not be the me I am today.
Thank you, Vitiligo!
