Let Me Fly
The sky beckoned to be explored
Imagination etched itself on the clouds
Rush of winds, tangled knots of hair
Her destiny called her out
Pure pearls fell, the grass blades rejoiced
Raindrops raced, the cacophony of crickets echoed
Separated only by a thin glass sheet
Her aspirations only meant be seen
Her tears had long since dried
And layers of loneliness caked her body
Her throat hoked with words
Unheard, unsaid
She was shackled to the walls,
Broken winged
In her dark, solitary cage
Trapped inside her own head,
Her thoughts became her demons
Undefeatable, unescapable,
She succumbed to their prison.
In her void of devils’ home
Nothing survived but a pulsating spark of hope.
Seasons went by, plants grew and withered,
Yet she remained captured, her desires lay in corner,
Untouched and forgotten.
He wings thrived to unfurl,
Her wishes screamed to be heard,
Thoughts banished returned with greater force,
‘Til she broke her confining mould.
No longer afraid, she accepted her difference
In ephemeral braveness she whispered,
“Let me fly,
Oh! Let me live
Why should I be bound to earth
When sky is the limit?
Why should I be silenced and my thoughts muted?
Why should freedom exist on paper, inked?
When society has us all imprisoned;
Forcing us to be the one and the same.
But,
It’s time we finally broke free
And reduced our manacles to dust.
It’s time we spoke up
And burned our gags to ash and dirt
It’s time we flew
And conquered the wide sky
It’s time we ran
To the lands, low and high.”
Her whisper became a battle cry,
Let me fly away.
