We’re a speck in a void,
a vacuum
flecked with salt of galaxies
and peppery black holes.

We might be alone,
but maybe we can’t
see the trees for the
cosmic stew and forest.

We consider ourselves a
bastion of light, safety, and
comfort in an oxygen-, food-, light-
lacking space.

We like to think we’re unique,
although there isn’t anything
special in
a rocky planet circling a star.

But are we really a quark in a galactic grain of salt
or the one place with lively light
in a universe of dark?
