― Mary Downing Hahn, The Doll in the Garden

Rain poured down onto the sand as we scoured the beach

Hoping to find you collecting shells for a new necklace

Instead it was just you

Which wasn't you

Ripped to shreds
That's what they put on that damn paper
The one that constantly reappears in the news
Where the person becomes a headline
And my fridge became a shrine
Full of every passage they wrote

I turn a corner and see the fragments of your fragile body-
Or what was left of it
Sprawled on my kitchen floor
Just like they were being washed away
Into the ocean that took you from me

The door to your room is kept shut
Because the silence that echoes is too loud
Too much of a reminder
That you won't come home today
Never again
