Almost Disney
All my life, I've been surrounded by the notion
that the only women who are worth anything
are those with waists thinner than a stick.
Or a wand, that I could wave around saying:
‘bibbity-bobbity-boo’
wishing away imperfections
into features as delicate as glass.
Slipping away from myself,
looking in the mirror and wondering
'who is that girl I see?'
and wondering if I'll ever amount to anything more than
just a frog.
Hoping that one day, I'll wake up from this nightmare --
-- society's dream
is a wish your heart makes, and my heart wants it more
than anything in the world.
But -- the truth is:
it doesn't matter.
Who cares if my hair isn't a mile long and silky straight?
Who cares if I'm not a size zero with wide, naive eyes looking through a magic mirror
mirror, on the wall,
Maybe I’m not the fairest of them all.
But even if I'll never be part of that world
of rod-thin figures,
gorgeous voices,
and beautiful faces,
the truth is:
society's a beast.
and I'm someone who can tame it.
