Riptide
Riptide
she appears to be like the rest of them
homogeneous
following the path that is set out and expected
merely a fish in a school
but underneath
she feels she is the only one
dueling, defying, countering
the omnipotent force that binds her.
The Current.
she wants to diverge, swim in the other direction
away.
but she faces a resistance of churning, spinning vortices
back and forth
held by the firm grip of
the expectations.
the promises.
the obligations.
that propel her along, tied and converged
to and fro
she is a fish in a school
who wants to break free from her Riptide
and find herself.

We teens often feel like we don't know who we are because we are so caught up in who we should be and who society wants us to be. We are bound in following the path that is expected, such as preparing for College, and fulfilling our obligations, promises and expectations that we begin to lose sense of who we are and what we truly want. Personally, I often feel like I am trapped in a powerful current, which is what inspired me to write this piece.
We need discover who we are as young adults in order to discover what path we want to follow rather than letting the "riptide" of our lives control us. We need to break free and follow our own paths. Swim in our own directions.
