My Heart's Package
If I mailed my heart to you,
The box would say Handle With Care,
And maybe when I’m angry,
Live Animal This Side Up.
Bubble wrap protecting it,
From the wobble and bounce of travel,
Newspaper that has never been read would hold it together.
Stories that had a greater purpose than to be supporting my cracked heart.
Maybe instead the box should said Fragile Glass.
I wonder how I would decide how to fold the box,
Which flaps hidden and which exposed.
The flaps beneath being suffocated but covered.
On top, flaps are free but vulnerable.
I wonder if my package would be flagged.
I'm not matching up to the standards,
My heart to heavy for transport.
Would I scribble my address or delicately write it in cursive,
Rushed or patient.
Useless or meaningful.
Would the stamp have the Statue of Liberty or the American flag?.
Symbolizing my freedom and power,
Or a puppy or a butterfly,
Innocent and playful.
Maybe the box would be filled with packing peanuts,
Resembling my small,broken squishy parts.
Would you open it and discover a letter,
Written past midnight under a flickering desk lamp.
My thoughts keeping my eyes wide open.
Maybe just a sticky note,
Small talk that is.
Or rather nothing.
Just my shattered pieces encased in unneeded protection.
Left for you to piece through
Like sorting personal items of a deceased loved one.
