For my mum who calls me-

To my mum who calls me a nun-

I'm sorry I don't show as much skin as you

I'm not a fan of the sun's gentle caress

I like the caress of my clothes, buttoned, and ironed to perfection.

Besides mum if I was a nun you wouldn't hear me curse.

To my mum who calls me a freak-

I'm sorry that I enjoy the things in this world that you consider strange and abnormal

For I myself am strange and abnormal,

I'm not a fan of being a cookie cutter person,

I like the freedom to express myself, although I'm not perfect.

To my mum who calls me a rebel-

I'm sorry, but I cannot disagree with you,

I enjoy the sides of the coins that you naturally wouldn't,

And just because you're a Christian doesn't mean that I have to be.

I enjoy my friends; the gays, trans/ non-bianary, lesbian, delightful people that I have in my life.

They've accepted me as me,

Which is something you still struggle with everyday.

To my mum who calls me hers-

I'm sorry mum, I don't belong to you

You may have birthed me, and you may be my mum,

But my body is my own, and my skin is my own,

The only thing that you can own are the rooms in my heart set aside for those I love.

For my mum who calls me....

I'm sorry that I missed your call

I've been busy;

Drowning in misery caused by school.

I know that you love me;

But I can't help feeling alone whenever I'm back at home.

I'll see you when I get home mum;

But I know you'll barely see me once I'm there because you'll be busy like you always are.

I love you mum;

I'm sorry that you think of me poorly at times.

I'm trying to make you proud.
