It was 1985

Male names were important
Dizzying atmosphere of glitz
Celebrities speculation at art fairs
City buses rumbled down
Famous, Embarrassed art world
Male names were important
Less woman or none at all
New York Sophisticates
Proudly use the “F-word”
Feminism
But women have to be naked
To be important

It was 1989 and
Black and white masked avengers
Irony and humor as their weapons
Male names were important
Girls embarrassed
Keep anonymous
Anonymity is key
Collective consciousness
Inhabited by right thinking
Open-minded
Armed with lies
An ongoing campaign
Has embraced them
But does not include one woman
Male names were important
Women’s work a lot cheaper

It is 2015
Sexism, Underrepresentation
Big investors want a quick profit
And there is still
a dizzying atmosphere of glitz
media glare
celebrity speculation
upper reaches
still
exclude
women

The author's comments:

I wrote this poem using extracts from a newspaper with my friend during my english class. I was inspired to write this piece from this newsarticle i read which was about the prevelance of men's art work in the art world, which I found shocking. It all started out as a class assignment but i was really passionate about the subject.
