I came here by ship

To make a new start after my trip
Traveling through the vastness of
the Atlantic Ocean

Looking for freedom and liberty
after escaping captivity

The right to live the American Dream
Coming with only a pocket’s full of belongings

To be able to provide for my family
To smell the saltiness of the oceans
And to view breathtaking views upon the tallest of mountains

I may see many troubles ahead
From the homeless families living on the grimy streets
To being able to maintain a healthy paying job

The American Dream is like licking on a cone of your favorite ice cream,
smooth and flavorful

And although this dream is not flawless
It is our place of success

It is more than a dream now
It is a reality that millions before me have achieved

What is the American Dream today?
Is it having money? Power? A fancy house?

To me it is being able to give thanks everyday
For I have a beautiful wife and two strong boys

I dream of a place where everyone is free
A place where everyone can be anything they want to be

America the brave and the beautiful
Where people come to escape their troubles

I wrote this poem for my English class after reading A Raisin in the Sun.
