What You See
What struck me first was what my eyes only saw
You stuck out like a flash of color in the world of grey
Your face was only one that stood out in the crowd
The sea seemed to be captured in your eyes
And the sun in your smile
You came closer and asked me to dance
While the words seemed to effortlessly flow off your tongue
Mine got stuck in my teeth and shakily tumbled out
My height was no match for yours
I felt small and inadequate
But then you whispered a joke in my ear
And soon the ballroom was filled with the sounds of our laughter
The night flew by as I talked with you
And too soon it was time to part
As we travelled home my parents made it clear,
I was never to see you again
I screamed for an explanation
But all I heard was a preconceived belief
While I saw something beautiful in every part of you
From your freckled cheeks,
Intelligent conversation
And kind gestures
They were blind to those
They believed if we were together it would be a sin
Because they couldn't see past the color of your skin
