Where I'm From
I’m from the first of three, but the fifth of seven,
The beginning of a newly blended family learning how to fit together.
I’m from learning how to work together in our large family,
Learning what it’s like to be loved by so many.
I’m from trying to understand that my sister and brothers are not only mine,
Having to share my family with their own.
I’m from having to let my sister go after every Christmas,
Back to the Golden State, and waiting to see her the next year.
I’m from realizing that every minute with my siblings is a gift,
Because I don’t see them as often as other people see their family.
I’m from exploring the wooded world behind my house,
And seeing the small creek as a river oasis.
I’m from spending summer days with my feet in the water,
Feeling the brown sand squish between my toes.
I’m from summer nights running around,
With neighbors that will be my friends for a lifetime.
I’m from early Saturday mornings filled with Lucky Charms and cartoons on TV,
Cuddling with my cats under fuzzy blankets.
I’m from having so much love and happiness,
And waiting for someone special to share that with.
