Anthesis
There once was a rose bud, blue as the sky
who sprouted quite far from the rest of her kind
with sunshine she grew and first felt a breeze
in a valley of flora much tougher than she
when dark clouds emerged she prayed them to help
but none understood the terror she felt
the wind picked up, thrashing her around
the rain fell hard, she thought she would drown
she begged the great oak tree, asking for aid
the oak thought the rose was just there to complain
the rose gripped the ground while the other plants jeered
she got no relief but the taste of her tears
and when the storm passed the rose was forlorn
never again did she cry, instead she grew thorns
that’s when I found her and though she did prick me
I always was gentle for I cared for her deeply
in time the kindness healed her wound
and all stared in awe the morning she bloomed
