The Nail
So small and simple, yet so mighty.
You take the blows of the hammer
Over and over,
One after the other
And still you hold yourself together.
I watch the force come down on you
And it makes me wonder.
How do you stay strong after so many beatings?
How can I be like you?
Strong. Unrelenting to the pain.
So small and simple, yet so complex.
Everything you're made of
Makes you who you are.
One hit, then two...three
I watch the blows try to beat you down farther
And for a second- I think they might win.
Your sturdy foundation starts to shake.
I watch you start to bend and I'm afraid.
But the weight of the hammer isn't enough
You're not broken
Just bent.
I know I can take you into my hands and repair your wounds.
A little push to straighten you back out and you continue
On your way, building bigger and better things.
And here I am, holding you tightly
Keeping you from bending.
