Screeching tires scream across the pavement as the eighteen wheeled chrome beast latches onto my only exit.

Swerving and slamming, our metal cab is scraped across the narrow bridge towards the open air.
Others shift their stiff gears to avoid collision as we race down the path
Still, not a sound present, all emotion abandoned as we just pass the drop--
to the raging rapids lying in wait.
Freedom is given as the machine darts away in fear,
though not knowing it was heading to its fate.
Time slows, eyes widen, and we all see our incoming point of impact.
No flashes of life, or tunnels of light appear in any line of vision
As five bodies clash and collide into each other like tangled puppets.
Strings to arms and legs contract to embrace and await for the wreck.
A metal guard opens its arms as if for a long lost friend.
Heads snap, clothes snag, as stifling smoke fills the air.
Lurching forward, we break from reality and become motionless
Limb by limb, bodies fall out and push through the twisted shamble
Looking to Heaven and Earth for an answer to our survival.
Quaking knees meet the ground as the only noise--a buzz--
fades to treading tires and wafting wind.
The exhausted engine gives one last huff, defeated.
A stranger pulls over and dials numbers frantically,
But the five bodies still shake and shiver, too scattered to process.
Blue and red danced into vision,
Blue bodies climb out of white stallions to escort the victims away,
Away from the smoke, away from the mess,
Towards safety, and clean air.
Questions mix with the sounds of the highway, looking for answers,
But there is no chance for the glazed eyes still scan the surroundings.
We should be dead, defeated, and beaten.
Only came out with scratches and bruises,
from buckles and air bags.
We should be dead,
Yet we were given another chance.
