He Said He Would
He said he would stop.
For me.
That I was worth more to him than some
cheap bitter escape.
That all he needed,
was me.
But his promises were as cheap as the
cans he drank out of,
and just as easily tossed away.
So I watched
as my father
turned into a man
then dissolved into a mere
human.
A dimly lit living room.
Nightly news humming, mumbling.
As he took shameful sneaky sips.
Apparently I wasn't enough.
But it was never about me.
It was always
always
about him.
And maybe that was the problem.
