Coexistence
I am singing
but I am silent.
I am alone
but I sing for the souls that gather around and lend their ears.
I sing for the hearts
that need mending
the furrowed brows
and the creased foreheads that need smoothening.
I see
but I am blind
for my eyes wander
but all I see is music.
It is a serene star-speckled night
and the animals have circled their dens twice and the trees have folded their arms
and not a single soul ventures into the dark
and my cello trembles against my chest
and I know that I am not alone
and that she is singing with me.
Her metallic hair dances underneath my cold callused fingers
and my heart is no longer in my body for it has dissolved
into the soft sweet skin of my wooden instrument.
I have become the cello and she has become me and together
we sing
and we are silent.
