The Punishment
First we’ll strap him to the table
Maybe read him a few prayers
We won’t try to comfort him
And he’ll realize we don’t care
We won’t feel any empathy
Because we know that he deserves it
We decided he must die
For the crimes he did commit
We’ll prepare the deadly needle
As he watches us and cries
We’ll ask him for his final words
He’ll scream, “I don’t want to die!”
He’ll continue to beg for his life
And say that he’s sorry for his sins
But there’s no stopping the punishment now
It’s the only way that “justice” wins
He’ll only feel a little prick
Before the chemicals stop his heart
After that, it will all be over
And from this world he will depart
We’ll take his body from the table
And lay it in the unforgiving tomb
We’ll try to forget that we were the ones
Who brought him to his doom
Not all of us were standing there
When he drew his final breath
But we are the ones who still allow
The punishment that demanded his death
We try desperately to forget it
We say we’re doing the right thing
An eye for an eye, a life for a life
He was just a criminal, not a human being
