Zoos, Prisons, Cages
  “Mommy”, they cry!
  How do you not see?
All they want is to be free,
Don’t you hear their plaintive cries?
Oh, can’t you see the tears in their eyes?
  The pain they hold
Some gave up and sleep all day
Starve themselves, picking their health away
But other walk around in circles all day
  Trying to find a way
Out of this prison, this cage, this zoo
  Stick them in small enclosures
  Denying them closure
  Putting aside their emotional needs;
For all those who haven’t given up hope
  I promise you’ll see a brighter day
Where the hurt will be taken away
And to all those who couldn’t bear the pain
Gave up, and slowly, painfully let themselves die
  This poem is for you
  Because I understand you
  They said you were free
But they gave you freedom within a cage
