The Box
It’s the beautiful, thin women
Who do exactly as they are told;
It’s the tall, muscular men
Who are the athletes or CEOs.
It’s the cool ones,
The popular ones,
The ones who get all the attention;
It’s the prom queens,
The captain of the football teams.
This is the box.
Everyone wants to be in the box.
But then you get in it
And realize that it’s not a box
But a cage.
You look through the bars
To see a world
That can’t be experienced
From the confinement of the box.
The expectations of the box
Weigh on your shoulders telling you
Don’t watch that;
Don’t go there;
Don’t eat this;
Don’t talk to them;
Don’t listen to that.
So you don’t
And then you lose who you are;
You become the box.
And once you become the box
The lines are drawn for you,
Your decisions are made
By someone who doesn’t know you;
Doesn’t know what you can become,
Who you can become,
What you can achieve
So please
Think outside the box.
