Focus.
The runner. The ball. The Plate.
My left thumb twitches, hungry
Sweat and dust sting my eyes.
Focus.
The runner. The ball. The plate.
Cutoff’s got the ball.
The runner’s prepping for the slide
My body tenses
Bracing for the impact-
The ball to mit
Runner to my calves
The weight against my webbing
The cleats biting into my shins
A tangle of limbs and leather
Frozen together,
The runner. The ball. The plate.
