Sorry
How many times a day do you hear a woman say the word
sorry?
sorry, but do you have a moment?
sorry, I need to go
sorry, I’ll try again
sorry, I can get that for you
sorry, my boss just fired me
sorry, he fired me because I was “not bringing enough sales because I’m a woman and women aren’t trusted as much as men.”
sorry, but men get more recognition than women
sorry, I’ll just act like I’m not making almost 15 percent less money than my husband
sorry, men and women aren’t anywhere equal
sorry, I just got my butt groped by a group of pubescent teenage boys
sorry, I just heard that my best friend got raped
sorry, he just told me that I wasn’t trying hard enough.
sorry?
girls. you don’t need to be sorry.
don’t be sorry that you are a women.
don’t be sorry that you are just as strong, or even stronger than all men
don’t be sorry that you try to look your best
don’t be sorry if you fail.
don’t be sorry if you feel you deserve more respect
don’t be sorry if you want to be different from other girls
don’t be sorry if you’re homosexual, bisexual, transgender, or heterosexual
don’t be sorry if you want to be unique
don’t be sorry if men treat you like a piece of dirt.
they don’t even know what strength and courage it takes to be a women
to be judged every day
to be untrusted
to be a predator of sexual assault or rape
to try just enough
to do our hair
to do our makeup
and even down to wearing high heels.
being a women is tough.
and men are soon to realize this
that women can be
doctors
dentists
cops
coaches
teachers
engineers
pastors
presidents
women can be anything they want to be as long as they work hard.
and I promise you that they will.
in our future, women will have more power.
women will be able to fight for themselves
women will not be treated as objects
women will not be looked at as weak.
women will stand tall and overcome the world.
we can do something huge.
so next time you are about to say sorry,
instead think of how proud you are to have strength, dignity, courage, and beauty.
because that’s what a women is.

I am thinking of entering this poem in my schools poetry slam. I think it's more of a "say out loud" poem than a reading poem, so just imagine someone reading this proudly.
I really think this is a big deal in our society these days and it NEEDS to change.
