Family Roots
On the hammock, my sister and I
sway to the music and talk—
  “Have you ever watched the
leaves blow in the wind?” She asks.
  And in that quiet pause
  I watched the trees bend
  and some leaves tumble down
as others held on like a child clinging
to the safety bar of a roller coaster.
I watch the leaves, but I feel her gaze
  as she gazes at me,
The two of us rooted firmly together
even in the wildest of life’s storms.
