Apple Pie, Apple Sky
It’s funny how we find ourselves here
Halfway between her and Texas
Toeing the line like New Mexico
Winks and you melt
The way I did when
you called last Sunday just to talk
You should have stayed because I got better
They tell me I’m alive because you, well, you didn’t stay
But I don’t believe them.
66 days between you and Nevada
Loneliness burnt more like Death Valley
Beneath the train noise are two boys who broke my heart like wagon wheels in a storm
Screaming in the dark
I reached out for you all the time
Tears streaming every night
You broke my heart but fixed the drought of 89
My savior.
On my knees I prayed for somebody like you,
All I got was a gas station Idaho phone booth “I don’t know”
and you’re “sorry”
I loved you in the desert moon
Light outside made me burn
But you made me shake like I was alone
I’d turn the car around for you
Back on I-5
I cried
Screaming, “but I still love you”
I still love you
I pause and think,
I love your compass hands and
Gasoline smile
Before Arizona- it wasn’t all bad.
We’ll meet again in Colorado-
I’ll look at you and the Grand Canyon skyline will align like you and I are just stars above
In a rush of passion
I see my destiny
Manifested in you
Unraveled in the backseat
Hands like blinkers changing lanes
Into the fast lane
Don’t press on the brakes
Until we get to the gold rush flush
I’ve hit the jackpot
