The Silent Companion

Weightless and intermittent, it always hides.
Yet, by your side, it always resides.
Active by day, when you stride in the Sun’s light,
yet mysteriously gone at the introduction of night.
Your silent companion enjoys following you,
but sometimes it takes the lead, though these times are few.
Related to darkness, though a distant relation
your companion hangs out with you, no matter the situation.
Though it has no mass,
it still copies you, even your sass.
Have you figured out who this friend is?
It is your shadow, and it lives.
