To my future self,
I wonder what you look like
.
I wonder if you’ve gone from jeans and scarves to business suits and high heels
I wonder if you drive home to a white picket fence and children running across the perfectly hedged grass as the dog chases them in elation.
I hope that when he comes home and holds you in a warm embrace, the diamond on your finger similes in the light,
The corners of your mouth turn up and the strings of your heart play to his favorite song every time.

I hope that when you lay in bed every night in the calming sea of the dark and close your eyes blissfully,
You know exactly who you are.
I want to know that you have your map figured out and know what direction to take in this world
And you can say to yourself that every mountain you’ve had to climb
Every uphill, pouring rain battle
Has been to get you to the other side.
And if your daughter comes home from school
With rivers flooding her eyes,
You’ll tell her that one day it will get better
And you mean it
Because it always gets better.
Because you can remember the day you broke free from your chains
And lifted the black veil off your eyes
Looked into the mirror,
And saw yourself clearly for the very first time

So my future self,
I wonder what you look like
I wonder if you’ve finally grown up
Finally have grown to the point where your heart beats once again without anguish
And you’ve come to realize that what’s inside
Is more beautiful than you could have ever thought
