I Am From
I am from my Downy smelling lovey,
From Jessica McClintock and Grey Flannel.
I am from the furry dogs suspended over my head.
Breathing, observing,
Protecting me like a mother with her baby cub.
I am from the eavesdropping room
Freezing like a meat locker
Whose old creaky floor I remember
When trying to be soothed as I cry a blood-curdling cry.
I’m from freshly baked challah and greasy potato latkes,
From Abraham to Rachel.
I’m from the Princeton’s and Penn’s
From newly strung Wilson racquets and muddy grass stained Adidas cleats!
I’m from the big brown eyes, and cold wet nose
With sandy blond hair
And a heart of pure gold
I’m from Joseph and Estelle,
Blood red roast beef and freshly polished spinning table
From the leg my mum mum lost
to the cancer,
The smile my grandfather was powerless to show.
Under my roof are family pictures,
Lingering to tell its stories,
A family of this kind
So rich in history,
I am from these moments
The ones that make me, me
I now pass it on l’dor vador.
