My father gave me flowers
When I graduated high school
My mother put them in the trash
“He threw our marriage away – it’s only fair”
I was scared to take them back out

I pressed them into the pages
of my favorite Salinger book
I placed a dictionary over it
I was afraid to take it out again

Not only did the petals vanish
But their scent disappeared as well
No matter how badly
I wanted to remember those flowers

They wouldn't stick
And they kept falling out
Or getting lost in the pages
As the story kept progressing
