One foot
In front of the other.
My feet swallow up the floor in front of me
Like a conveyor belt.
Eyes cast downward,
I recognize obstacles by their shoes.

One foot
In front of the other.
I take the stairs two at a time,
My sneakers untied,
fearfully hoping I'll fall
So I'll have a reason
To lie there,
Inanimate,
Merely an obstacle for all the faceless,
Indifferent shoes moving past me.

One foot
In front of the other.
I sigh as I reach the top of the stairs.
"Tomorrow," I tell my feet,
Asserting the same lie I told them yesterday
