And just like that, it was all gone:
Permanence… Stability… Everything.
It was once proud and safe;
A beacon of hope and strength.
On the ocean floor, our shelter
Claims its final resting place.
It was us, once. It was beautiful
And safe. It was together; it was whole.
But sails were splintered by gunfire.
Beauty was swallowed by embers.
So tell me:
Where better could one take refuge?

The author's comments:
This piece is an allusion poem. It was inspired by an excerpt in Ford Maddox Ford's The Good Soldier. The excerpt reads as follows: "We were, if you will, one of those tall ships with the white sails upon a blue sea, one of those things that seem the proudest and the safest of all the beautiful and safe things that God has permitted the mind of men to frame. Where better could one take refuge? Where better?" This passage is located on page 11 of Ford's novel.
