Tackling Regret

As you’re shrinking in a maze that spells regret,
Memories of the past find cracks in your skull
And plant themselves there,
Puncturing your delicate membrane
Which holds a chamber full of your secrets that you wish to forget
Even though you’ve tried so hard to chase their existence away,
The more and more you trip over their deep roots.
And you soon begin to realize,
No matter how fast you run to chase them away,
You’re going in circles,
And you’re the one running from them.
But darling,
You’re ok.
These mistakes and that regretful pit that has been growing inside you are only weighing you down
Making you trudge and use your weakening muscles to grasp your way through this day
But how can you expect this to get any better when you’ve practically fallen to your knees,
Lacking a “life alert” system,
And praying to a God that maybe isn’t even there.
If you could only realize that this memory is slowly turning inside out,
And pasting itself to a scrapbook of lessons that you will forever hold under your now thicker skin.
You can’t run from this,
You can’t run from what you know is true,
But what you can do is turn around and abolish those hurtful words and heartache, which you’re feeling you deserve,
And look them in the eyes and remind yourself
That they’re behind you for a reason.
