Freedom is a word of many meanings
I have the freedom of love
I love people, places, things
I have no restraints,
nothing to hold me back,
nothing to make me hinder.
But there is a girl,
a girl halfway across the world
that has to risk her life every day
just to have freedom.
I don’t bury love in the depths
I can let it breathe, get some air,
exhale it to the world
like a blossoming flower blooming
under the caressing rays of sunlight
like a butterfly opening her damp wings
for the first time, ready to fly.

Freedom is soulful
The freedom to believe
In who we want, what we want
We don’t keep our beliefs sealed
in a jar never to be opened.
I have no restraints,
nothing to hold me back,
nothing to make me hinder.
But there is a boy
a boy halfway across the world
that has to risk his life every day
just to have freedom.
We don’t have to live like those
who get brutally beaten just because they
own a bible or pray a single prayer
Their soul is stifled and they are forced into silence.

Freedom is powerful
I have the freedom to say whatever it is I feel like saying.
I speak words of wisdom or words of sorrow
words of joyfulness and words of hope
I can voice my feelings that are balancing
on the tip of my tongue ready to leap

I have no restraints,
nothing to hold me back,
nothing to make me hinder.
But there are people,
people halfway across the world
that risk their lives every day
living for freedom.

This piece was inspired by some stories I read on persecution and I was struck by their willingness to fight for their freedom and what they believe in.
