Midnight tea
We drink tea past midnight because
we are convinced the heat
twirling in the cups between our hands
will heat our hearts…
like we need more warming in the
spaces where we are always on fire.
The liquid warms our throats
and our laughter pours out in
sweet, sweet honeyed melodies…
like we could get any sweeter.
Our eyes portray hidden messages
as our lips gently sip the
aromatic blend tickling our nostrils…
like we need to say anything at all anyway.
I didn’t need the tea,
I just wanted to be with you today.
