Leaving My Hometown
Someone joked with me,
“How will you leave it?
Your small farm town.”
It will be different.
The food, the sounds, the work,
All these people around.
I've only known living in the open.
On 5 acres,
Taking 10 minutes to walk across the street.
30 minutes to a mall or other family.
It's quiet, pretty, never busy
Long winding back roads, with bends
begging to be taken too fast.
Being the last ones to regain power after a storm,
Or not having trash pickup is worth it -
The miles of sun-kissed fields,
Deer wandering in backyards,
Unsuspecting target practice.
Acres of captivating woods behind houses,
With trees well beyond our years.
This way of life is what I know.
Not close neighborhoods, like dorms will be.
I'll be okay leaving though,
It will be the same town I know
When I come home.
