Why Must I Forget?

Everyday I forget my life;
There is a monster in my mind;
That monster and my memories had a strife;
Everyday I look into strangers' eyes, with nothing to find;

My Husband's eyes are filled with pain;
Our years together are missing;
Can this monster be slain?;
I hear it's voice in my ear, hissing;

I glance at the people around me, patiently gazing;
I realize there are quite a few;
As tears slide down my face, I know my life must have been amazing;
Everyday, my love for my family is new;


The author's comments:
This is about an elderly lady who has Alzheimer's. She wakes up and her family explains her life to her. Everyday she meets her family again. My Grandmother inspired this poem. Before she died, she developed Alzheimer's.
