What is Love?

As a child,
Love was a fairytale,
The ones that embellished the pages of our books,
And the happily ever after movies
With the winsome princess
And the handsome prince
So simple, so plain
Yet we anticipated for it every passing hour
We desired to be the breathtaking princess
With her lovely prince
Oh, love was so innocent, so sweet.

As a teenager,
Love was a revelation,
The secret realm concealed behind the gates of innocence
We found out,
Love wasn’t as beautiful as the stories, the movies
Reality hit us,
Not just physically,
With the bruises and cuts, came loneliness and rejection,
Those nights spent with running mascara and a piercing pain in your heart,
Love came too easily, too simply,
We relied too much on love, thinking it’d save us
The only thing it saved was another heartbreak
So up came those walls,
The heavy makeup, bitter words, bolted doors,
We couldn’t risk facing reality again,
Oh, love was so heartbreaking, so bitter

As an adult,
Love was a remedy,
The light that shone across a dark, desolated room,
We found out the fairytales were true,
There really was a happy ending,
And the happy ending was a man,
A man who wouldn’t use your heart and send it shattering across the floor,
Instead, a man who’d pick up the broken pieces,
Call them beautiful, and mend them back together,
Everyday was amazing,
Life was so full of laughter and carelessness,
Because you’ve finally gained all your trust back,
And placed it on a man,
A man, who you knew was just right,
Because he made you forget,
He erased all the pain and scars from the past
And replaced it with loving memories.
Oh, love was so trusted, so assuring

I was inspired to write this poem after watching a romantic love story.
