The sweet summer has faded and the cool air has come in,
Though it is not quite winter yet.
Reality hits and now I am forced to see how things really are,
Leaves change from green to red like your mind starts changing about me.

A sweater wraps around me tightly like your arms giving me a hug,
But the sweater becomes itchy and I want to escape like the birds flying south.
Warm drinks fill my soul and the memories of how we used to be flood back,
The crinkling of the leaves are the cracks in my heart.

The leaves fall as tears roll down my face,
I am confused like the multicolored leaves that float to the ground.
Sitting by the fireplace watching the flames dance,
I wonder if you really care.

Fall comes to an end and I wish summer would return,
Times were less confusing and laughter and love were all that mattered.
Now, I sit here alone by a pile of leaves to think,
Wicked winter is coming and I know how it ends.
