People say: what you had was real
it's not actually over
By real, I guess they mean
slow dancing to the ocean
in a time of people who don't know
each other's names
grinding to a lifetime of auto-tuned silence.
By real, they mean
I don't know what they mean
But I do know that the Roman Empire
was real,
the wooly mammoth was real,
the velveteen rabbit spent its whole
pathetic existence becoming real,
Anna Pavlova was real, and the period where acid-wash denim was socially
acceptable was
real.
that doesn't make it any less over.
