Looking back on yester years,
Open metal coffins caked in debris.
Horrors flood through tattered memories.
A figure stumbles down a stone path.
Boiling subterfuge drips languidly from wicked wounds.
Knees buckle and relieve the body’s burden.
Serpents form crimson rivers in the tar-covered earth.
Soiled dove feathers hold no peace in times of war.
No screams are heard on these frigid nights,
For bindings keep forked tongues wedged behind razor teeth.
Wolves sink frothing snouts into rotting flesh,
Skin back masks that keep the enemy so well hidden.
They warn us that we should mend broken bones and build up from the ashes.
They are harbingers of the end.
The eyes fall blind as blankets of truth settle upon the weeping corpses.
Today is as dark as yesterday.
Close Pandora’s Box.
Hide all honesty.
Paint blank faces for the children of tomorrow.

This was an assignment given by my creative writing teacher... with a personal spin.
